Enterococcus cecorum infections

Enterococcus cecorum Dr Thijs Manders is a distinguished poultry veterinarian and researcher at Utrecht University and Royal GD, specialising in bacterial diseases affecting poultry. Since 2018, he has conducted research with Royal GD, investigating the virulence and pathogenesis of Enterococcus cecorum strains. In this webinar, Dr Manders will explore three key areas of E. cecorum research.

In our recent expert session with poultry specialist Professor Sjaak de Wit, he discussed the latest developments in avian influenza. Avian influenza is a major concern for poultry farmers and, increasingly, for public health. Sjaak provided an update on the latest developments in the field. He discussed both high and low pathogenic circulating strains, their clinical outcomes, virulence and the models and tools available to control avian influenza.

PRRS

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) has evolved over time with mechanisms to replicate better in its host, spread faster between pigs, and escape immunity. As a result, PRRSV is difficult to control by vaccination alone. In this expert session, Prof Nauwynck talked about the evolution of PRRSV and its genetic basis, and how to control PRRS with a new vaccination strategy and accompanying measures.

Influenza in Pigs

Cryptosporidium parvum calf model

Our experts Debora Smits and Erik van Engelen discussed the development and use of the Cryptosporidium parvum calf model. The importance of C. parvum infection, the mechanism of disease and burden of disease will be described. Additionally, they showed how an experimental model gives more insight in the course of infection and gives tools for the evaluation of preventive or curative measures.

Bovine Respiratory Disease

Webinar on the current situation of bluetongue in the Netherlands. In this webinar we will briefly review the results of various studies on bluetongue since the start of the outbreak in September 2023, including the detection of BTV-12 in October 2024. Bluetongue experts René van den Brom, Katrien van den Brink and Inge Santman-Berends will discuss the results of the impact of BTV-3 on cattle and small ruminants in 2024, the effect of vaccination and ongoing studies.
