At the request of the Ministry of Agriculture in Vietnam a workshop on combating animal diseases took place. This workshop, initiated by the Dutch Agriculture Council, was held on August 21 in Hanoi, Vietnam. African swine fever is widely spread in Vietnam, so this was one of the main topics.
A contribution from the Ministery of Agriculture showed that African swine fever (ASF) broke out in 62 of the 63 provinces in Vietnam. Only the centrally located province Ninh Thuan, is free of the disease. In the meantime, 10 percent of the entire pig population of Vietnam (4 million pigs) has been killed.
The round table discussions were organized to create a cooperation between the Vietnamese and Dutch government to eliminate ASF. The Dutch Chief Veterinary Officer Dr. Christianne Bruschke gave an introduction about the Dutch approach to outbreaks of animal diseases. In addition, Dutch ambassador Elsbeth Akkerman and various Dutch companies were also present to contribute to the workshop, including Jan Willem de Vries and Tom Duinhof from GD. The animal feed company De Heus already has several branches in Vietnam and also gave a presentation about their vision on ASF.
Tom gave a presentation on the veterinary insights to reduce the risk of outbreaks of African swine fever. Because representatives of Hypor (part of Hendrix Genetics) and MS Schippers could not be present, GD has included their contribution in the GD presentation. GD hopes to launch a project on the control of animal diseases in Vietnam together with these partners.
